Backup and disaster recovery

Disaster recovery as a service and managed backup

We design, run and test the backups and recovery sites that bring your systems back after an outage, a failed upgrade or a site loss. Recovery targets are set with you, immutable copies protect against tampering and every plan is tested before you need it.

  • DRaaS and backup as a service
  • Recovery targets set for each system
  • Immutable backups and regular recovery tests

Why it matters

A backup you have never restored is a guess

Many organizations find out their backups do not work at the worst possible moment. Jobs have been failing quietly, a critical server was never added, or restoring everything would take days longer than the business can wait.

Our disaster recovery and backup services start from two numbers for each system. The recovery time objective (RTO) is how long it can be down. The recovery point objective (RPO) is how much data you can afford to lose. We design backup and replication to meet those targets, monitor every job and prove it with regular tests.

What’s included

DRaaS, backup as a service and managed backup

How it works

From recovery targets to a tested recovery plan

1

Set recovery targets

We agree on RTO and RPO for each critical system, ideally using the results of a business impact analysis.

2

Design

We design backup, replication and recovery site options that meet those targets within your budget, on premises, in the cloud or both.

3

Deploy and protect

We implement backups and replication, set up immutable copies and separate the backup environment from everyday admin access.

4

Monitor and test

We monitor every job, fix failures and run scheduled recovery tests so you know the plan works.

Deliverables

What you get

  • RTO and RPO targets for each critical system
  • Backup and disaster recovery architecture
  • Immutable, isolated backup copies
  • Disaster recovery runbook with failover and failback steps
  • Daily monitoring of backup and replication jobs
  • Scheduled recovery tests with written results
  • Microsoft 365 backup and restore
  • Evidence for SOC 2, HIPAA and cyber insurance reviews

Case study

Disaster recovery for a major golf manufacturer

After a spin-off from its parent company, a global golf manufacturer needed a secure network and a disaster recovery design that could keep its manufacturing and distribution running through any disaster, on budget and with limited staff.

We designed and deployed a highly available disaster recovery site using existing and new infrastructure, protected the data crossing the WAN and provide 24/7 managed network and security services.

  • Disaster recovery that can be enabled within three minutes
  • Virtually no loss of data on failover
  • A recovery site that can run as a production site when needed

Ransomware

Backups are your last line against ransomware

Attackers look for backups first, because deleting or encrypting them makes a ransom harder to refuse. Immutable copies, separate credentials and monitoring of the backup system itself keep your recovery options open.

We added immutable backups for a Southern California accounting firm so that ransomware could not compromise its business continuity. If an attack does happen, restoring cleanly also takes containment and investigation. That work is covered by our ransomware and cyber recovery team.

FAQ

Backup and disaster recovery questions

Disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) replicates your critical systems to a recovery environment run by a provider, usually in the cloud. If your primary site or systems fail, you fail over to that environment and keep operating, then fail back when the primary is restored.

Backup keeps copies of data so you can restore files, databases or whole systems. Disaster recovery is the ability to bring services back within a set time, which usually needs replication and a ready recovery site as well as backups. Most organizations need both, sized to each system.

The recovery time objective (RTO) is the maximum time a system can be down. The recovery point objective (RPO) is the maximum amount of data, measured in time, you can afford to lose. Shorter targets need more replication and cost more, so we set them system by system.

Immutable backups cannot be changed or deleted until a retention period ends, even by an administrator. That protects them from ransomware and from attackers who have stolen admin credentials.

Microsoft keeps the service running, but your data is your responsibility, and built-in retention may not cover accidental deletion, malicious deletion or long-term restore needs. A separate Microsoft 365 backup gives you your own copy and faster restores.

Cost is driven by how much data you protect, how many systems need replication, how short your RTO and RPO targets are, where the recovery site runs and how often you test. We scope it by system and give you a fixed monthly proposal.
